In City on Fire, we learn vague details about Samantha – she's a child of divorce, always has a point-and-shoot hung around her neck, made a 'zine which is supposedly semi-autobiographical but really just tells the tale of an underground band. "From now on Charles, you're going to be my project," Samantha tells him, because she calls him Charles instead of Charlie for no apparent reason other than that it adds to her mystique. A dreamy montage details the brief period in which Samantha sweeps Charlie off his feet, roaming from a record store to a vintage store. After meeting in a record shop, the doe-eyed Long Island teen whose father died in 9/11 gets his first taste of city life during afternoons spent with Samantha after therapy. "Tell me about the girl," his therapist says, referring to Samantha. Then, White Lotus-style, we trip back a few weeks earlier as our hero Charlie (Wyatt Oleff) sits in therapy. Amid the festivities, our heroine Samantha (Chase Sui Wonders) lies dying in Central Park from a gunshot wound to the head. Yet unlike those soapy teen dramas, City on Fire begins with a grisly crime scene. City on Fire opens to the pop of July 4th fireworks across a 2003 New York skyline, placing us in the year Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage debuted The OC and the city that its East Coast successor Gossip Girl was set in.

Once you learn the new Apple TV+ thriller City on Fire is from the creators of Gossip Girl and The OC, you start to see the hallmarks of those two shows in this one, like thumbprints in a finger painting.
